Big(ish) Bird Race
I hatched a plan a few weeks ago of a Big Bird Race with a view to having a serious assualt at the county (excluding Rutland) record of 110 set by Messrs Fray and Gray back in 2007. However after several beers in the Steam Trumpet (Thornton's new pub) last Wednesday, Dave and Andy came up with a twist to the original plan. We would only visit sites within walking distance of the village. This will give us time at Thornton Reservoir, Browns Wood and surrounding National Forest land and Bagworth Heath. We are also hoping to take in the pits at Brascote. We have set outselves an ambitious target of 90 species and we are planning May 1st as the day

Hi Russ
If you are going to sacrifice a day I'd go for the Leicestershire record. If the area is too small you are likely to have long gaps waiting and hoping and probably getting frustrated. If you get a bit of 'stake out' help there's nothing like a full county bird race. When Mez, Hub Tiddy and I did the L&R race in '97 John Wright staked out RW and we scored big time. Even without 'dodgy geese' we still made 115. I'd be happy to do some 'staking'. cheers Neil
Best of luck with your Bird race but you won't beat mine and Mr Fray record! ;-]
No, we wont come close to the record Dave but then again we'll hold this one for ever 'cos nobody else in their right mind will want to challenge us........Neil, you're welcome to join us on this yomp. I'm sure you'll be able to add something even with your advancing years ;)
